Rehana Palansuriya
Game Programmer
I am a games programmer with a software engineering background. I am passionate about playing and making games. I have successfully completed the Professional Masters (MProf) in Games Development at the Abertay University (in Dundee, Scotland, UK) and will be graduating in November (2011).
My dedication to the work I do, adaptability, interest to learn new technology and ability to apply the knowledge gained effectively has helped me achieve my goals successfully in the past. I am a fast learner. For example, for my first game I developed a full 3D, platform based, side-scrolling game (named "MISSION: QUEST". Sole programmer in the team.) within the first four months. The game was targeted for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) platform. Developed using PhyreEngine (by SONY), it included features such as full 3D programming (in C++), physics programming (with Bullet physics), movement/behaviour programming, collision detection and full 3D menu. In addition, it include a check point feature where when a player is killed in the game it remembers the closest completed check point in order to continue the game. Throughout the MProf (12 months) program I have worked as part of small and large development teams to develop games targeted mainly for Consoles (PlayStation and XBox), Handheld (PSP) and the Web.
Please find further information about this and other main games developed at Games .
I have a Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Advanced Software Engineering from the Napier University (in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK). This MSc helped me gain knowledge and experience of Advance Software Engineering concepts such as Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE), Parallel Computing, Web Development and Web Services. My MSc project work included research and development into "Parameterization based component adaptation". To support the dissertation, a proof of concept tool (prototype) was designed and developed using Java and Eclipse IDE. This was an individual project.
My work experience has helped me to learn effective and productive ways of working within teams of highly diverse people to achieve objectives. My first job was with a small company in Sri-Lanka called ‘E.T. Lab Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd.’. I worked there full-time while studying for my diploma (full-time, in the evenings and weekends). Though I started as an administrative assistant, soon I applied the knowledge I gained in my studies and developed a computerized system to replace a full manual data system. As I was working directly under the management I soon learnt the problems that faced day-to-day running of the company. With this knowledge I extended the developed system to support reduce managerial problems. My dedication to help achieve company goals by helping to deliver good customer service, the ability to learn and apply knowledge into various areas at work and helping find effective solutions to daily managerial problems gave me the opportunity to be a part of the management team and work with highly diverse people.
At present, I am looking to apply and enhance my current skill set in games programming.
